Retired Bishop in Residence, Bishop Emeritus of Multan

Bishop Ernest B. Boland was born in Providence and attended St. Patrick School, La Salle Academy and Providence College. He entered the Dominican order in 1949 at St. Rose Priory, Springfield, Ky., and completed his studies at St. Joseph Priory, Somerset, Ohio, and at the Dominican House of Studies, Washington. He was ordained on June 9, 1955, at the Dominican Church, Washington, by Bishop Hannan. He served as a high school teacher in Columbus, Ohio, before volunteering in 1957 for the Pakistan mission. In January 1966, he was appointed administrator of the Diocese of Multan, and ordained a bishop on May 17, 1966. Bishop Boland resigned for the see of Multan in 1984, and then resided at St. Dominic’s, Bahawalpur. He resided at St. Thomas Aquinas Priory at Providence College 1995-2017, and curretly resides at Jeanne Jugan Residence, Pawtucket, RI. Bishop Boland has served as an assistant to Bishops Louis E. Gelineau and Robert E. Mulvee.
